‘Cause that’s how much I’ve kept up on this lately. Ah well. BUSY! I’m sure all of you who are actually reading this know I have started my own little Etsy shop (Enfys Creations) and it’s been doing insanely well for as little as I advertise! During December, I literally had at least one order a day…custom or ready-made, which is more than I could have asked for considering I just started. Awesome!ย

It’s slowed down, which is a good thing, by the way. I still have plenty of orders to keep me busy and am attempting to post new items when I have the time to do it! I have a TON of items lined up…tons of fun.

Anyway…

It’s 2013 now…which is just ridiculous. I remember when Iain was born, I figured out when he’d be starting school (kindergarten)…2013 seemed so far away. Not that I would say time has flown…it’s just funny. Yep…he starts kindergarten this fall and he’s SUPER excited. It’s only half-day, which is nice…for both of us…it would be quite the shock to go from no school to full-day school. I’m sure we’d handle either but…anyway…I like half-day.

Let’s see…what else can I babble about. Really…life is just full of playing with Iain…teaching him (love school time with him!)…crocheting up a storm…watching movies/tv with Jim and playing games with both of them. Yeah…Iain is officially a “gamer” (he has been for a while but…he just played his first game of D&D minis last night…which makes him officially part of the club).

He got Skylanders Giants from Santa for Christmas and played and played and played (I have to admit…it’s an awesome game…I have my own Skylanders, though nowhere near as many as Iain…and it’s a lot of fun). We “beat” the game in a couple days…I say “beat” because we don’t consider it beating a game until we have collected everything! But it seems a lot of people consider a game “beat” when you’ve played through all the levels. Ah…what’s the fun in missing over half the game? It’s like LEGO games…what’s the fun in JUST playing through the levels once…rather silly.

Speaking of LEGO games…Iain got his belately birthday gift of LEGO Lord of the Rings the day it came out, which if I remember correctly…was Nov. 14th. There were so many release dates for that thing…can’t remember. Now…that game…was/is AWESOME! We love the LEGO games and, as I’ve told my husband many times, I don’t feel bad spending the ย money on them like I would some games because we don’t just playย LEGO games…we kill them…we get every last thing including all the PS3 trophies…and then…Iain still continues to play the games. He’s still playing LEGO Batman 2, which we killed a WHILE ago. He just loves them.

Ok…what other random things can I write about?

Let’s not forget karate…the other LOVE of Iain’s life…haha. He got his green belt with black stripe before Christmas…

Image

And…for Christmas he got his black uniform. He has been asking for this since he started over a year ago…he’s super happy to have it…now to get him to wear his white one…ever again. Haha.

I’m sure there’s more I can write about…but for now…I’m off to play…

We went to Iain’s 4th tournament this past weekend. He’s a camo belt with a black strip now and it was his first tournament with sparring and WEAPONS!! Last week, he started asking me if his teachers could help him with the tournament stuff (he hadn’t done nunchucks it a while because they are doing sticks in class now (which I just learned are called Bahng Mahng)) and he wanted to be prepared (plus…practicing nunchucks is FUN!). So…I asked his teachers for him on Wednesday and Thursday and he asked on Friday (which was pretty darn cute). On Friday, his teacher told him exactly what he should do with his nunchucks (the judges just tell them to “do what you know”…but honestly…that doesn’t seem to work very well with the little kids…haha…they often just stand there until the judges tell them what to do…or randomly swing them)…Iain doesn’t like doing things unless he KNOWS what to do. So…his teacher told him he should do three triangles with a swing with each hand and then end with a two-handed lunge thingy with a “hiya” (can you tell I don’t do karate? haha…”lunge thingy” is so definitely not the technical term…ah well…I know what it’s supposed to look like when he does it…that’s good enough for right now…I’m sure Iain will correct me eventually…as he always does). Iain loved it and practiced it soooooo much Friday!

Anyway…Friday night we went to the hotel…nice, inexpensive Econolodge (seriously…we aren’t made of money…inexpensive is awesome!). We were supposed to leave in the afternoon right after Iain’s karate class but…Jim had a customer picking up an MG and we figured that 2G was more important than leaving exactly when we planned… And then…we went to leave and our GPS crapped out so…since we greatly depend on that when we go to tournaments (and pretty much all the time!) we decided to go to Target to see what they had. Ended up getting a TomTom…that has way more features than our 5 year old Magellan GPS (which was great 5 years ago…but not now)…and our new one has free lifetime map updates. It would have cost $80 to update the maps on our old one…it was totally worth the extra $20 to get a new one. Love it. Anyway…so we did eventually get to the hotel around 8:30 and watched some Karate Kid before going to sleep (seemed totally appropriate ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Saturday morning, we went to LaRoche College for the tournament. Iain was soooooooo exciting! We got there around 8:30 (after dealing with a detour…I suck at detours even with a GPS). We got there in time to see the Opening Ceremonies, which Iain LOVES!! What little boy wouldn’t want to watch a bunch of people breaking boards in awesome ways?!

Usually after the opening ceremonies, we only have to wait like half an hour before staging but…since he’s no longer a white, orange or yellow belt…we had to wait much longer. I don’t honestly know what time it was before camo belts were called but Iain was GREAT! Way more patient than I am…haha. He loved watching the specialty weapons and such (dual nunchucks is awesome!). I love watching, too…because the older kids are really good. Eventually Iain’s group was called to staging and he got to line up with the other camo belts (and green, purple and blue, I believe?). He looked SOOOOO tiny…and was very overwhelmed in line…he ended up around these much bigger/older kids and kept getting “smushed” against the wall…I made my way to him and told him to just move out of the way rather than stubbornly staying in “your spot” in line…haha…and then he was ok.

Anyway…he did AWESOME at his form…his nunchuck moves were FANTASTIC! (he did just what his teacher told him to do…complete with “hiya”, which the judges obviously got a kick out of) and his first sparring match was AWESOME (I’ve done enough venting about the second one…so we’ll leave it at that…haha…the kids will grow up eventually and learn how to spar correctly…and in the meantime…I will just appreciate the sparring at his school all the more ๐Ÿ™‚ ).

He got two trophies…the blue one for “Following Directions” for form/sparring and the purple one for “Powerful Weapon Handling” for weapons… We are all extremely proud of him!

I’m not going to even pretend I’m good at blogging any more. So…if I write here from time to time…I see that as a success.

These past couple weeks, Iain has had swim lessons. His first time in the water by himself. Not that you’d know. At all. He got right in and acted like he’d always been swimming. Funny. He LOVES to dunk and spent about 90% of his lessons underwater…dunking and swimming underwater. He figured out how to swim underwater by himself…that’s not something they teach in the preschool class…but he figured out it could be done and he loves it. We’d only signed him up for one two-week session…because honestly…he’s BUSY this summer but…after the awesome time he had the past two weeks…we decided to sign him up for another two-week session…in Level 1 instead of preschool. He’s such a good little swimmer and has sooooo much fun…how could we not squeeze in another couple weeks of lessons?

He also started his camo belt classes a couple weeks ago. Now…he loved his karate classes before…but now…he has a whole new LOVE for them. He totally enjoys sparring (the little kids are pretty funny to watch, too)…and he has fun learning his nunchucks, too (though he’s only had that a couple times…he’ll have more this week). He spars against his little friends…and hasn’t quite gotten the idea of it…but he’s just starting and he’s 4 so…that’s ok…he’s having fun with it and that’s great ๐Ÿ™‚ The rest will come with time and age.

We decided to sign him up for karate camp, after all. At first we weren’t going to…we put quite a bit of time and money into his karate as it is…between monthly fees, gear and tournaments…but…we just couldn’t NOT let him go. He’s going to have so much fun! Three days…three hours each…of just karate? Awesome.

He’s also going to Vacation Bible School at the end of July…so…between that…karate camp (and classes)…more swim lessons…car shows…Medieval Faire…etc…we are BUSY this summer…but that’s how summers are supposed to be.

Camo Belt…

It has been Iain’s big karate goal since he started 9 months ago to get his camo belt. Why? When he gets his camo belt tomorrow…he gets to start sparring (aka…pretend battling as Darth Vader) and learning weapons (nunchucks and stick). He is beyond excited to be testing for his camo belt. We picked up all the gear a couple weeks ago (June 2) and he was sooooooo happy…

He tried on all the gear…and tried out some moves.

Great fun.

Right after he gets his camo belt, he has a week off from classes because it’s the World Championships and his teachers will be in Little Rock but…come June 26th…he’ll be all set to start some sparring and weapons.

Thanks to a paranoid mom…Iain thinks all strangers are evil…sounds good in theory but in reality…it means he won’t talk to people he hasn’t met before…even if we are standing right there talking to them…telling him it’s ok. “No…they are strangers and strangers are evil.” (I’ve never actually told him that…he just figures that since he learns karate moves to do on strangers and we tell him not to talk to strangers…they must be evil.) We’ve been working on it little by little…explainng that it’s ok to talk to them if we are standing right there telling him it’s ok.

Iain went to the dentist for the first time today and I spent 15 minutes before leaving explaining that the dentist is going to be a stranger but that it’s ok to talk to him…that he’s a nice stranger and it’s ok to talk to strangers mom and dad say it’s ok to talk to. Most strangers are evil but you can listen to mom and dad, too…haha. He accepted what I told him and thankfully, he talked to the dentist. Helps that the dentist is really nice and great with kids. Iain had a great time…laughed throughout and can’t wait to go back! Awesome.

The dentist was surprised when he counted Iain’s teeth to find only 19 instead of 20…but it’s nice to know that just because he never got that baby tooth…doesn’t mean he won’t get the adult tooth. Just like…just because he has a crossbite now…doesn’t mean he will later. We shall see.

He also has a tendency to start punching the air when a “stranger” starts talking to him…doing his “moves”….because that’s what you do to strangers. He doesn’t do it in a mean way…just a “haha…see what I can do so watch out!” way…to show he knows what to do to strangers…but we ask him to stop all the same. Luckily…he didn’t do that to his dentist…but he did show him his knife hand many times…he was smiling and laughing…just showing off his “moves” so that’s ok…it’s all about the motivation behind his actions…haha. And his dentist thought it was hilarious.

All in all…a good first dental experience.

Tiny Tiger Yellow Belt

Iain tested for his yellow belt this morning. He did pretty well…and most importantly…he had FUN! It’s pretty funny…he doesn’t really understand the idea of testing…of doing your absolute best because it’s a test…haha…he sees it the same as any other karate class…which is good…’cause he doesn’t stress over it (something about a 4 year old stressing over anything seems silly)…and he does as well as he feels like doing…haha.

He’s really happy to have his yellow belt! He’s eager to learn new moves…(like most kids) he’s EXTREMELY eager to get his camo belt…then, not only does he get to start “battling” dressed like “Darth Vader”…he gets to do the “camo moves”. They did the camo form in a Friday class because it’s a mixed class and there was a kid with a camo belt there. Ever since…he’s been talking about it non-stop…there’s a move called “rainbow”?…that’s what he calls it…and he LOVES it. Kicking and spinning is way too much fun…haha. He actually did the form surprisingly well that day considering he’d never done most of the moves before. I find he listens WAY better to new things…than to things he’s been doing for weeks. Just an observation. He’s eager to do more difficult moves but…he needs to learn the basics before he can start the more challenging moves…which is what I keep telling him. He still ABSOLUTELY and TOTALLY LOVES!!! his karate classes…and is SUPER excited every time we go…every day…and practices all day at home…and talks about it whenever he isn’t practicing…but he still whines about learning “more and more and more!!!”…which I’m pretty sure he will always do. It’s like when we’re doing “school time” at home…he wants to learn everything all at once…which is just not possible…haha. He’s definitely not very patient.

We’ve been having LOTS of fun doing karate at home…especially now that he has a hanging punching bag in the basement. Too much fun! Jim and I are attempting to help him…and we’re doing pretty well considering neither of us have taken karate of any kind before… I would like to learn some…so I could help him out at home…but at the same time…I feel “too old” to start learning something like that…and honestly…we don’t have the money…especially with the expense of him starting pre-school next year. Anyway…so he’s ecstatic to be one step closer to camo belt. He’s LOVING his new yellow belt! And he’s SUPER excited to learn new moves.

He’s also wayyyyy too eager to be in the leadership program (or as he says…he wants to be a teacher!…like the other bigs kids in class and like his teachers). He talks about it all the time…which is awesome. He LOVES being a little helper…and helping his teachers…and he wants to teach the other kids (who are all older than he is, by the way). Unfortunately (and fortunately, actually, because he really needs to learn more before he can teach others…haha)…he’s got a while for that one. In the meantime…he has lots to learn…and LOTS of fun to have.

We have signed him up for another tournament…and he’s really happy to have his yellow belt in time to go.

On another note…pre-school registration for 2012-2013 starts Monday. It’s weird to be signing a kid up for school…I’m totally ready for him to go to pre-school…which is great! Because a year ago…I wasn’t. This will be his first year of “school”…it’s only 2.5 hours…Mon-Thurs…so it doesn’t even interfere with karate ๐Ÿ™‚ …and he’s going to LOVE it. I think it will be really good for him, too…to get out and socialize with kids. He does it at karate…but he needs more than that so that he’s ready for kindergarten. It’s gonna be awesome…and I’m very interested to see how he does.

Anyway…how cute is he?!

I turned the big 3-0 this past weekend…I had planned on staying 29 but…despite what I used to think…30 really isn’t that old. Haha. When I was 20…30 was unimaginable…seemed so far away…and so old. But…I’m 30 now and…seriously don’t feel old. I have days here and there when I feel ANCIENT…haha…but I’ve pretty much always had them. So…

Rachel came out for my birthday weekend (kind of a tradition since we moved out here). We had great fun. Went to the movies to see The Phantom Menace in 3D on Sunday, which Iain totally loved…yay for seeing Darth Maul on the BIG screen…he’d obviously already seen the movie but…it’s a whole new experience in the theatre in 3D ๐Ÿ™‚ And we found out during the previews that there’s going to be a new Spider-man movie coming out in 3D, which we might just have to go see.

Other than that…we hung out…went to the “toy store”, where Rachel picked Iain up some more Star Wars LEGOs…

We also went to two of my favorite places…the antiques co-op, where I spent some of my birthday money and got a magazine rack (which I wanted/needed)…

A new vintage purse/carpet bag…

And a couple other things. I could seriously spend way too much time there (and have in the past)…love it there.

Also went to the West Side Market on Monday (thankfully Jim could take off to drive there because of a couple of reasons…including…I don’t drive in/into the city). We spent a few hours there buying lots of wonderful foods…had lunch…great fun.

Rachel picked Iain up a LEGO cupcake at one of the bakeries, which he enjoyed when we got home.

We also watched a few movies this weekend…including Dolphin Tale (which I loved…and Iain did, too ๐Ÿ™‚ )…and Larry Crowne (which I liked a lot…and Iain didn’t understand, which is ok…because it was my birthday movie). Also re-watched some Black Books (a British TV show we all highly recommend!…we being…my parents, Rachel, Jim and I.)

All in all…a fantastic long weekend.

What’s up for this week? Iain had karate last night…he has it again tonight…but has off for a couple days because of testing. He tests for his yellow belt on Saturday morning…he is SUPER excited. Can’t believe he’s going to be a little yellow belt already…sparring is coming up a little too fast for my liking (and not fast enough for Iain’s…haha).

We also signed Iain up for another karate tournament in PA. It’s in mid-March and he’s very excited!

Note: I know I haven’t been writing here much but…not for lack of content…more for lack of time…we shall see if I get better at keeping up or not…
